Allow me to introduce:

I’m hoping this will be a good weekly feature. Every Monday I will post one or two cover versions that I like, or perhaps they are just funny/controversial. Maybe I’ll be able to get a bit of a debate going as well! Why have I chosen Monday of all days, I hear you ask? Well, when I thought of ‘cover’, I thought of hiding under bed covers wishing I didn’t have to get up on a Monday for school/work… so this is for those who hate Mondays. Hopefully I can cheer you up before school/work or put you in a better mood when you get home! I’ll also be using YouTube for you to hear the music as this is not an MP3 blog. I think it actually works out better like this anyway, as I like to see the bands performing as well.
Foo Fighters – Keep The Car Running | Original
I realise I’ve been going Foo-crazy recently, but I had to put this as my first cover. I was watching their recent Brighton performance on BBC Three last week & was quite shocked when they started playing this Arcade Fire song. It just seemed the most unlikely band they’d cover. However, I think it works rather well! You can hear/see the original above as well, which was performed on ‘Friday Night With Jonathan Ross’ earlier this year.
The Dresden Dolls – War Pigs | Original
I only found this yesterday, but I think it’s really great! It’s so passionate & powerful. A very brave cover to do as well as it’s a female vocalist, they’re only working with drums & a piano, & they’re a completely different style of music to Black Sabbath. I don’t really know too much about The Dresden Dolls, but it’s an interesting take on the track & they seem absolutely mental live, I love it! The Black Sabbath original is linked above as well.
What do you all think of these covers? Do you think they do the originals justice?

Haha. This put a huge grin on my face. Awesome idea! Needed something to cheer me up on Mondays and this will be just the thing.
Can’t wait for the next one!
Comment by Mike August 27, 2007 @ 9:21 amIMHO, the Foo Fighters’ cover is awesome and easily does justice to the original. Impressive that they managed it with a relatively small band compared to the 10-man line-up of Arcade Fire! Not too keen on the Dresden Dolls cover, although to be honest they’re not really my sort of music so I can’t really comment fairly.
Covers are funny things generally and almost always splits opinion. Some can be much better than the original (The Shins’ cover of The Postal Service’s “We Will Become Silhouettes), just as good (Muse’s version of “Feeling Good”) or plain terrible (Godhead’s version of Eleanor Rigby).
Comment by Rob August 27, 2007 @ 9:59 amMike – Thanks :) really glad you like the idea & it’s done what I intended!
Rob – I thought exactly the same about Foo Fighters managing it with a small band, really impressive. Fair enough on The Dresden Dolls. I’ve always quite liked Godhead’s version of Eleanor Rigby, but that just may be because I’m not a Beatles fan & quite like industrial rock music haha.
Comment by Sarah August 27, 2007 @ 11:13 amSounds good..look forward to revisiting..Danny
Comment by Danny August 27, 2007 @ 6:06 pmThis is a neat idea. The first one I have heard and enjoyed, the second one I’ve never heard, but will check out. Thanks!
Comment by Jamie August 27, 2007 @ 6:13 pmThanks, glad you both enjoyed the post! :)
Comment by Sarah August 27, 2007 @ 6:18 pmI’m yet to follow the links as I can’t justify the time out of my studying (law, yay!) but I just wanted to say I think this is a very interesting idea, and I like it when blogs have regular features :) Perhaps My Ruin’s version of Tainted Love will come up at some point? I personally prefered it to the MM version – partly because Manson was going through his ‘pimpin’ stage, and because he generally doesn’t appear to have the greatest respect for women, or anyone really!
Covers that aren’t very good (IMHO): Brand New doing ‘Am I Wrong’ by Love Spit Love, Love Spit Love doing ‘How Soon Is Now’ by The Smiths (LSL version is otherwise known as the Charmed intro), Ronan bloody Keating doing ‘Iris’ by Goo Goo Dolls (grrr), West-bloody-life doing ‘More Than Words’ by Extreme.
Comment by Grace August 28, 2007 @ 1:12 pmEep, a lot of my friends are doing law – very stressful & time-consuming! But that’s the same for most degrees haha.
Yeah, that might come up at some point, although I don’t think they did a video for it & Tairrie despises it now! I’m not a fan of the MM version either, I know exactly what you mean. I liked their older music but the way Manson’s been behaving recently has made me think much less of him & his music. Ugh.
Comment by Sarah August 28, 2007 @ 1:29 pmThe further away he got from Reznor the more of an idiot he became IMO!
Thankfully i’m not doing a Law degree just a law module! It would nicer if I wasn’t doing a full time job at the same time – but I can hardly complain since they’re paying for the qualification! I’m sure uni was easier the first time round!
Yeah I heard that Tairrie hated it now, what’s with musicians hating their own music! There is the obvious ‘Have a Cigar’ covered by Foos, with Taylor singing, but I think it was a B-side. Very good live though, not least because Dave got on the drums and gave us a treat of Grohl-in-his-element drumming :)
