Soul Drift

Sarah June

Another artist I have come across through MySpace is Sarah Weathers, aka Sarah June. The music took me by surprise as it was nothing like other bands/artists that had contacted me, but I was also enchanted by the fragile and dreamy sound. Her songs are bleak, heartbreaking & lonely sounding, as if she is a sad ghost girl desperate for love. Her vocals are like those of a little girl; it is haunting but I cannot seem to stop listening. The music is in the same vein as Hannah Fury & some tracks also (perhaps strangely) remind me of the track ‘In the Cold Cold Night’ sung by Meg White on Elephant by The White Stripes.

Sarah is a singer-songwriter from Detroit, now living in San Francisco. She has been singing and playing piano and guitar since childhood. In high school she began writing songs inspired by the haunting imagery of the industrial wasteland she was surrounded by. The songs were recorded and edited alone in her apartment, with many songs recorded in a closet or bathroom for better acoustics. Most of the songs were recorded on one track, with Sarah sitting in front of a microphone with a guitar & singing. I think knowing this emphasises the loneliness felt through the songs.

If you’re interested, you can stream the whole of her debut album, This is My Letter to the World, on Last.FM, & there are also a few tracks to download. She has also recently done an interesting interview with Black Magazine, a translated version of which can be found on her MySpace blog.

Recommended Listening: ‘Illustrated Man’, ‘Radio Wave’, ‘We Lurk Late’, ‘Charlotte’
