Catherine Elms is a purple-haired singer, songwriter & pianist from South Wales. With influences including Tori Amos, Amanda Palmer & Emilie Autumn, her music combines heavy rock, dark cabaret, emotionally-charged melodies & idiosyncratic lyrics.
Strangely, before meeting Catherine at University, we had already “crossed paths” through my Frock You project in 2006 which promoted females in music in South Wales (& beyond!). I had featured all-female rock quartet, Irony, which she was part of. The band achieved a great deal, including gaining second place prizes in a number of local Battle of the Bands & Young Songwriters competitions. The girls went their separate ways in 2006, & Catherine formed Adam’s Rib with local guitarist, Hermione Taylor. The acoustic duo played a number of small, intimate gigs in the local area. After Hermione decided to pursue a solo career in 2007, Catherine moved away from the guitar & began composing music on the piano.
Catherine is currently recording her first album, Wednesday’s Child (due out in April 2009) & already composing material for her second album. She is also currently working on an album entirely of cover songs, which will be available to download online for free in summer 2009.
You can listen to previews of the album on her MySpace page & I recommend listening to ‘I Should’ – I think it’s fantastic song. I’m looking forward to the album(s)!
