Review: Cheyne Stoking (Huron)

Huron were the first of the ‘newly discovered’ bands that I wrote about at the beginning of this year. They are reminiscent of Pantera & unfortunately, as much as I hate to say it, too much like them for me. As much as I like Phil Anselmo-style vocals, I think they are a little overdone on the album. I am the type of person that can listen to harsh vocals & get used to them over time, but after listening through the album a few times, though the music is good, the vocals are still relentless & grating. I would quite like to see them do something a bit different vocally in future, more towards the song ‘Your View From the Sun’ but not necessarily taking the music in a lighter direction. Lead vocalist, Palmer, has a good melodic voice & I think that if he focused more on developing that & combining it with the growls, the tracks could be so much better. I still really like the track ‘Lust of War’ & I’m glad ‘Your View From The Sun’ & ‘Dirt’ were put on the album to break it up a bit. I also think that the second half of the album is much better than the first, which is strange – it’s usually the other way around!

Overall, the album is a bit of a disappointment, especially since I have been really looking forward to hearing Huron’s debut since January. However, I definitely think they have potential & hope they continue to develop their sound & put their own mark on it.

The album is released in the UK on May 25th & you can hear five of the tracks on their MySpace page.

Yeah Ive heard the promotional album also and I have to disagree, I thought the first half of the album was good with Lust Of War and View From The Sun but the second half they seemed to run out of idea’s.
As for the vocals a bit of experience in recording is needed but they were powerful and melodic at times and as for the Anselmo comparison I can only see a slight similarity.
Production quality could have been better it feels abit grainy and raw.
But for a debut effort it left me wanting to hear more, so roll on the second album 6/10

Thanks for your comment! Interesting to read someone else’s take on the album. I guess everyone can’t always agree?!

I really want to point out the as a reviewer your meant to be impartial and comments like “I think” and “I hate to say” shows your inexperience. And streaming your weak and uninspiring comments all over the net is very upsetting.
Im so glad other reviewers with more credibillity dont have your view about our album as THE KERRANG gave it 4k’s out of 5 and ROCKSOUND MAGAZINE gave it 8/10.
The way I choose to sing has really nothing to do with you and if you find my voice annoying then dont listen!
We NEVER asked you to review the album we NEVER sent you a copy of the album so remove the review
and the links you have sent it out on.

Actually, reviews are always subjective, there is no way to be objective about anything. As a history student I know that is a fact.

Also, I have NEVER claimed to be an expert, in my ‘about’ section it states that this blog is meant for ME to talk about the music I come across & how I feel about it. I don’t work for a magazine & I am not a journalist. This is a personal blog & I can write whatever I want.

I’m sorry that this review has offended you so much, but why care so much about what one person has to say? If Kerrang and Rocksound have given you great reviews, then be happy with that and don’t come shouting your mouth off on my website. This obviously shows your inexperience if you cannot take any kind of criticism.

Your publicist actually sent me your CD when I got in touch with Rising Records, so I did get sent the CD for review. I am not going to remove this. I am entitled to express my own opinion, we do after all have freedom of speech.

Seriously?! This band felt sooo insulted by a single bit of constructive criticism that they felt the need to spew out this stream of insults…

Did you guys even read this review? It wasn’t even that negative. Guess you overlooked the comment about Palmer’s ‘good melodic voice’ and ‘have potential’???

I wasn’t the biggest fan of this album, but I thought it was a good debut effort. Well… until the lead singer just showed what a complete d*ck he is. Well congrats dude, you’ve just shown your own ‘inexperience’ and lost a potential fan.

I really hope that the blog’s owner does not take this sort of trash-talking to heart. Long live Soul Drift Music!!!!

I agree with Le9endary the vocalist just showed himself to be a complete ego maniac.
If I was in a band with him Id be hanging my head in shame.
The album was passable at best.

Sarah carry on what you are doing this was a great review.
You will find that nobody bands with a bad attitude like this will never get too far.
